There is a wide range of headphones and headsets on the market, catering to every type of need, from making regular calls while on the go to listening to music or lectures to immersive video game play.

Is there a difference between a headphone and a headset?

Yes. A headphone refers to the two earcups that are connected via a wire or headband and allow you to listen to the audio output. A headset also includes a microphone, which may or may not be detachable.

What are the different types of headphones?

In-Ear:

These headphones are the most compact type and are easy to carry around with you. They are the small headphones that are usually included as a free extra when you buy a cell phone or mp3 player.
Over-Ear:

Over-ear headphones have cups that surround the ear, which helps to prevent external sounds from filtering through into the audio that you’re listening to. This encapsulation also enables superior sound quality, as it captures sound nuances and frequencies better than other headphone types do. They can be
- Closed-Back:
  
  These completely insulate the sound, not allowing any sound to escape from the headphones’ cups, which is why they’re often referred to as ‘noise-cancelling.’ However, they also exert a lot of pressure on the eardrum and can be dangerous if used continually.
- Open-Back:
  
  These headphones are open at the back in order to allow for sound pressure to escape from the earcups. This is safer for the eardrum and also helps to create a soundstage audio effect. The downside is that the released sound is audible to others, so these are only really suited for private, in-door use.
On-Ear:

On-ear headphones sit directly on your ears and tend to be smaller and lighter than over-ear headphones. They therefore allow sound pressure to escape from the sides. The reverse is also true, as ambient sounds also tend to filter in. This is good if you want to monitor what’s going on around you, but you may have to keep the volume down so as not to annoy the people around you.
